More than 250 fifth graders from Van Wert, Crestview, Lincolnview, and St. Mary’s descended on downtown Van Wert at the first-ever “Let’s Get Down to Business” event hosted by Career Connections of Van Wert County on Tuesday, May 10. Career Connections is a collaborative effort at the local level to teach financial literacy and career exploration.

With more than 35 local businesses participating, students were given a first-hand look at the career opportunities available right in their own backyard. Students were broken into four groups and visited various stations throughout the day. They were encouraged to act like consumers where they asked questions, completed tasks, and earned tickets in order to pay bills and purchase goods, teaching them how to make good financial decisions.

Several companies and organizations brought in large equipment, vehicles, and other opportunities for students to explore up close. Tours of the downtown area provided students with the opportunity to learn about the different roles businesses play in our community.

Central Avenue was closed for the day between Washington St. and Market St., allowing students to safely travel between stations.

Van Wert City Schools and the Career Connections board would like to thank the many individuals and businesses that participated in and donated raffle items to this year’s event:
