Van Wert Elementary School News

Today a bomb threat was made at Van Wert Middle School. The Middle School/High School building was searched in coordination with the Van Wert City Police Department, the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. We have been given the all clear and all schools will release on time today. All students are accounted for and safe.

Today VWMS found 2 suspicious notes regarding a bomb threat to the school. Students from VWMS and VWHS have been relocated to Van Wert Elementary School per our evacuation protocol.

The Board of Education of the Van Wert City Schools, Ohio (the “District”) in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Sections 153.65 through 153.72 is soliciting statements of qualifications (SOQ) and design-build services.

The Van Wert County Health Department has answered some frequently asked questions regarding Covid-19 isolation and quarantine. 

Due to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) guidelines and the reduced number of regular season football games, Van Wert City Schools will not be able to sell season tickets for the 2020 football season.

Van Wert fourth-grader Blaine Baxter chose an interesting year to become a 4-Her. Despite only having one in-person meeting with the Ohio City Blue Ribbon Workers, Baxter recently completed his project and even raised $700, which he donated to the Van Wert County Humane Society.

We hope you have had a safe and enjoyable summer! We would like to again share our appreciation with the help and support you provided regarding the last few months of school.

Governor DeWine announced yesterday, August 4, that the Ohio Department of Health will issue a health order requiring that K-12 children wear face coverings while at school.

It's official! Saturday was my first day of retirement. It has been a joy and a pleasure to serve as superintendent of Van Wert City Schools these past two years.

Thank you for your patience as we have worked with area superintendents, our district’s administrators, VWFT Association representation, and the Board of Education to put together the guidelines for reopening Van Wert City Schools for the upcoming school year.

The Educational Boards of Van Wert City Schools and Lincolnview Local Schools met in special meetings on Thursday to approve remote learning plans and district calendar changes.

During the 2019-2020 school year, all Ohio schools were closed for the remainder of the school calendar year beginning on March 17, 2020 by order of Governor DeWine and State Health Commissioner Acton in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. 

FinalForms is now open for parents to make updates for the 2020-2021 school year. 

If you are at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines and have a minor child in your home who will be attending school (Preschool - 12th grade), we may be able to help you purchase shoes. 

With an eye on safely returning students to classrooms next month, Van Wert City Schools is working on plans to do so.

Governor DeWine has released his guidelines on Reset and Restart to School in the fall and we have been planning for the return to school in August.

Rather than doing a spring fundraiser this year, the Van Wert Federation of Teachers collected donations from members to donate to the YWCA summer food program. 

The 5th annual Operation Back to School outreach event, sponsored by First United Methodist Church, is set for the afternoon of Aug. 2, 2020.

Wednesday’s Van Wert City Board of Education meeting was the final one for Superintendent Vicki Brunn.

The VWCS Superintendent's Office will be closed for office maintenance.

The Van Wert Area Chamber of Commerce partnered with Sister’s Embroidery and More to offer Van Wert Strong t-shirts to the community.

Covid-19 and its impact on Van Wert City Schools was the focus of the majority of the Board of Education meeting held on Wednesday, May 27.

The Van Wert City Schools Food Services department would like to thank Tecumseh Packaging Solutions and Leland Smith Insurance Services/Erie Insurance for their generous donations that helped provide meals to students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Van Wert Service Club will sponsor a summer speech and language clinic again this year.

During a press conference Friday, area principals announced that all four Van Wert County schools (Crestview, Lincolnview, Vantage and Van Wert) will hold virtual graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Four potential dates are under consideration for Van Wert High School’s 2020 graduation ceremony.

In a press conference held on Monday, April 20, Governor Mike DeWine announced all Ohio schools will remain closed through the end of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Van Wert City Schools Music Department invites all students, alumni, staff, and community members to participate in their new Community Connect Performances.

So that we can continue to serve the needs of our district while protecting the safety of our staff, beginning Monday, April 6, we will be providing our Grab and Go meals one day a week on Mondays from 10:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Teachers in the Van Wert City School District have a new three-year contract.

Van Wert City Schools will begin E-Learning with its students today, March 26, 2020.

For those needing to take advantage of Van Wert Elementary's assignment pick-up, they may do so on Thursday, March 26 from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

So that Van Wert City Schools can better prepare meals for our district students, starting Monday, March 30th, 2020, we will begin providing our Grab and Go service two days a week from 10:45 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.

The Van Wert High School Theatre Department would like to inform all that our spring musical, Disney’s Tarzan ® , The Stage Musical scheduled for April 2, 3, & 4, 2020 at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center is cancelled due to the state mandated closure and concerning development of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

The Van Wert City Schools Board of Education plans to approve a three-year contract to employ Mark Bagley as their next Superintendent, effective August 1, 2020.

Van Wert City Schools has cancelled all school-related events beginning Monday, March 16 through Friday, April 3 due to the order announced by Governor Mike DeWine on Thursday, March 12.

There are currently no cases of COVID-19 in Van Wert County.

Van Wert High School’s FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) students are raising awareness for the growing concern of bus safety after receiving a $1,000 grant from Families Acting for Community Traffic Safety (FACTS).

Van Wert City Schools, in correlation with Ohio Revised Code 3313.64 or 3313.65, will again permit students from other school districts in Ohio to apply and enroll in the district's school system through "open enrollment" for the 2020-2021 school year. 

A presentation by Justin Krogman and fourth grade teachers led off the February meeting of the Van Wert City Schools Board of Education on Wednesday.

The registration of kindergarten children attending Van Wert City Schools for the 2020-2021 school year will be held March 2, 2020 to March 13, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Superintendent’s Office in the S.F. Goedde Building.

Van Wert City Schools Superintendent, Vicki Brunn, traveled to Columbus Thursday to provide her testimony before the Senate, supporting the plan the Ohio House passed in early February to make changes to the current EdChoice voucher program and overhaul Ohio’s state report card and testing system.

The man whose name has become synonymous with the Van Wert DARE program, Officer Greg Blackmore, will be retiring from that position April 15 after 24 years in that position, and 30 years on the VWPD.

The Van Wert High School Athletic Department will hold a “Military Appreciation Night” at the Varsity Girls Basketball Game versus Ottawa Glandorf High School on January 16, 2020.

During Van Wert's first Board of Education meeting of the new year, Board members approved a resignation at the end of the school year due to retirement from Superintendent Vicki Brunn. Brunn is in her second year as Van Wert City Schools Superintendent.

Motivational speaker Ray Lozano and his daughter, Brooke, were in Van Wert County this week to speak to students and adults about the dangers of substance abuse — drugs and alcohol — as well as the dangers related to smoking and vaping.

On Wednesday morning, shortly after school started, Van Wert City Schools conducted a full-scale evacuation drill.

It appears random drug testing will not be implemented at Van Wert High School at this time. During Wednesday night’s Van Wert City Board of Education meeting, VWHS Principal Bob Priest told the board that, after researching drug testing, he has changed his stance on the testing.

Van Wert City Schools, in partnership with Energy Optimizers, USA, is poised to launch a sweeping energy and security improvement project that is expected to save the district more than $115,000 annually.

The YWCA of Van Wert County is offering a FREE athletic opportunity for youth in Van Wert County. 

Through their annual end-of-year fundraiser, the Van Wert Federation of Teachers donated a total of $2,500 to two local youth summer programs.
