The Lady Cougars returned to the diamond after a week off on Tuesday night and got a WBL over Defiance 10-6.
The Lady Cougars broke the game open in the second inning with a five-run frame to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
Abbi Marbaugh brought home the first run of the game on a bunt back to the pitcher that plated Sydnee Savage. With the exception of an RBI single from Emilee Phillips, Van Wert’s three remaining runs in the inning came on a pair of errors form the Bulldogs.
Defiance comitted seven total errors in the game that accounted for eight unearned runs.
The Cougars added two more runs in third inning on back-to-back flyouts from Marissa Mottinger and Carlee Young to up the score to 7-2.
Kiara Saam brought in Van Wert’s eighth run of the game in the fourth inning to extend the lead to six before Defiance took three runs back in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-5 game.
Saam drove in two runs for the Cougars as part of a 1-4 performance. Saam and Lorynn German then put the game out of reach when they drove in Van Wert’s ninth and tenth runs of the game in the sixth on a pair of groundouts.
On the mound, Emilee Phillips pitched the Lady Cougars to victory after holding the high-powered Defiance offense to six runs and 13 hits in seven innings of work. Phillips also had two hits on the day with an RBI.
Van Wert (2-4) is scheduled to play their next game on Friday at home against Wapakoneta.
